Weatherbox - Sound In The Signals Magazine Interview Preview

We interviewed Weatherbox for the May issue of Sound In The Signals Magazine. I've decided to post the first two questions (and answers) from that interview as a preview to the full interview. The full interview will appear in the May issue of the magazine. Click READ MORE to check it out.

Your Daytrotter Sessions were just released. I've always been a fan of the Daytrotter stuff and enjoyed not only the music but artwork they release for all the sessions. What was it like recording your session? Do you get any input on what artwork they use for the session?
The Daytrotter Sessions just posted were actually recorded in 2009. The Weatherbox timeline is a little shaky, but essentially, the band during those recordings was four incarnations back. This was right when I started to tour with a full band again, after about a year hiatus of just doing acoustic solo stuff. We recorded in Rock Island on the way to Chicago and it was pretty early in the morning. We did everything really quickly and had to get on the road but everyone was really nice there. Daytrotter is good people.
I can’t really vouch for it as a good sampling of what Weatherbox sounds like now. I was listening to a lot of shellac and jesus lizard at the time and I was into the loudness and the feedback and the punk sex. It was fun, but the Weatherbox of now has got the weathersonics down to a science, so I hope we can go back soon and get some newer stuff daytrotted.
We didn’t get any input on the artwork. The picture they used isn’t actually the band that played on the recording but ya know whatever.

You guys have been playing a few new songs live lately. Cosmic Drama came out a while ago. When can fans expect to hear a new album by Weatherbox? What do you think will differ on the next album?
We took a little detour from this new writing process for the full length to write and record an EP that we’re self-releasing called “Follow the Rattle of the Afghan Guitar.” I just finished all the vocals this week with Ben Moore (Hot Snakes, Soft Pack). We also have “Call Me Home: the Home Recordings of Brian Warren’s Weatherbox” coming out but that’s hinging on a couple factors as far as when it will be publicly available.
The newer songs are pretty hard to explain in the context of Weatherbox. The music is written as a four piece band with all the members present and contributing. The songs are only half ready when I bring them to a practice, so it allows for much more discussion and experimentation. This translates into the songs having more complex and open structures and me spending less time wrestling with minute details later on.

Leslie Mosier - Sound In The Signals Magazine Interview Preview

Leslie Mosier will be featured in the next issue of Sound In The Signals Magazine. Since her album is out today I've decided to post the first four questions of the interview today. Click READ MORE to check out the first four questions and read the full interview in the May issue of Sound In The Signals Magazine.

Your debut album is out today. What’s it like to have the album out and what do you think has changed about yourself and your music since the EP was released?

It’s such an amazing feeling to have the full-length record out! I’ve been working on it for over a year and its been really hard to keep the songs to myself. I feel like both as a musician and as a songwriter I have matured a lot, and I think it shows in this record. When I released my EP everything was still very new to me and I didn’t exactly know how to go about the process of releasing a record. Over the past year I have not only learned a lot but I’ve gained an amazing support system with great fans that I am very thankful for.

We talked about your EP last time and how you had the chance to work with a lot of members of Nocturnal Me on it. Who did you work with this time around?

I was super fortunate to be able to work with the same team that I worked with on my EP. Dave Melillo was once again an enormous help for the record, and we co-wrote a few of the songs as well. He also played the guitar tracks. Mikey Lasaponara is the most incredible drummer that I have ever gotten the chance to work with and he once again did an amazing job bringing my songs to life. Mike Brylinski (Goo Goo Dolls, Nocturnal Me) was once again my producer/engineer, and he is awesome as well.

The full album has a great summer vibe to it. What inspired the songs and what overall mood were you trying to capture with the album?

The songs on this record are all about falling in love and believing in yourself. I write from personal experiences, and it’s safe to say that my lyrics are practically my personal diary. I wanted the record to be a very positive and uplifting one overall, and I feel like that vibe comes across.

What track off the album means the most to you and why?

This is a hard question! Each song comes from a different time of my life and has a certain memory connected to it. But since you’re making me pick just one, I would say that “What Became of Me” means the most to me. It’s about just letting go and giving it your all..I wrote it about everything that was happening with my music career at the time.

Penguins Kill Polar Bears - Sound In The Signals Magazine Interview

This interview will be featured in the next issue of Sound In The Signals Magazine but I decided to go ahead and give people the opportunity to read it now. Click READ MORE to check out the interview.

Your new EP came out March 22. Can you tell me a little about the album and what went into recording it?
We wrote and recorded the album over november and decemeber of 2010.
The EP has 2 older songs on it (Wish With Worry & Lungs) and 2 new
songs(Between The Tide & Something Old) on it that we wrote
specifically for the EP. Once we were happy with the songs we headed
into the studio to record some drums. We always record our drum tracks
at a studio called The Old Mill. We fell in love with the place when
we started working on first EP there. The studio's live room is
actually a 17th Century Theatre and the ambience is something we've
always tried to capture on our recordings. Once we got the drums down
we headed into my bedroom studio to work on guitars, bass and vocal
tracks. Doing the majority of the work ourselves gives us a level of
control i think we'd struggle to have if we were recording in
"professional studio". It also means we're not working against the
clock and gives us plenty of time to experiment with different sounds
and ideas.

The title of the album is Vessels & Veins. That's an interesting title
why did you decide to title the album that and what was some of the
inspiration for the title?
We decided the name for the EP just as we'd finished recording it. We
had been trying to think up for a name for a while and Vessels & Veins
was one that we all took a liking to. I thought it up when i was out
walking in the woods with my dog and it was a name that always stuck
in my head. I think it was particularly fitting because all of the
lyrics being so heart felt and personal.

You guys got together from what your bio says on a mutual love of good
music. What types of music are you guys interested in and what
inspired you to start the band?
The Smashing Pumpkins, Brand New and
The Appleseed Cast have all been a big influence for us. We all played
in different bands when we were younger and i think back then Nirvana
was probably the main reason we all wanted to play instruments and
start bands. Recently when we were on tour we listened to a lot of
Biggie Smalls, i think it's only a matter of time before Ben starts
writing lyrics about bitches, blunts and welches purple grape juice.

To anyone who hasn't heard your group what track would you recommend
them to check out and why?
Check out Something Old, it's a song we're
all very proud of. We spent a lot of time recording it and i think we
ended up with around 12 guitar tracks playing at the end of the song
to create that wall of noise. Make sure you listen to it with your
stereo cranked right up.

What all is in store for the group in 2011?
We've just started working on our debut album which we hope to have
out at the end of this year/early 2012. We're also going to be
releasing a new single at the start of the summer to coincide with
some shows we've got planned. It'd be great to hit up a few festivals
as well and play to as many new face as possible.

What are your plans now that this album is out?
To continue doing what we all love doing, we're always constantly
writing so by the time we get this album out we'll not doubt have
album 2 well underway. I think it's safe to say we'd all like to play
over the pond in America and Canada so hopefully we can get over to
play a few shows.

I guess that about wraps it up. Thanks for taking the time to answer
the questions. Do you have any closing comments you'd like to make?
Never trust a hippy with a flute.

Love Automatic - Sound In The Signals Magazine Interview (PREVIEW)

Love Automatic will be featured in our May issue (which will be out in less than two weeks!). Since their new EP Organ Donor drops today I decided to give a preview of the interview. Click READ MORE to check out the first two questions of our interview with Mike Glita.

You just released your new EP Organ Donor. What was the recording process like for this EP? How was it different working on this EP than some of the bands you guys had previously been in (Senses Fail & Armor For Sleep)?
Mike: Well, it is a completely different animal than any of our previous bands. All of us are fans of dance/electronic music, but we mainly have all played in rock bands before this. Since it's Electro House music, it isn't the "typical" recording process of heading into a big studio and laying down tracks. We self-record and produce everything in Nick's room, where we have our home studio. Besides Brent's vocals, it's all electronic programming. As time moves forward, and we have more money, there is a possibility that we may incorporate some more organic elements.

I'm always interested in the writing process when bands incorporate a lot of electronic elements in their music. How do you guys write songs and will the songs be performed differently live than on the record?
We try not to have any set way of how we write music, but usually it starts with a basic idea/template that Nick will come up with in FL Studio (FruityLoops). Then I (Mike) will come over and we will build off that and try to arrange the music accordingly. Once we have a pretty good idea of where the track is going, we send it off to Brent, who then writes lyrics and melodies. When he is ready, he will come and lay down some scratch vocals (rough vocals), and we brainstorm and make any slight changes we think is needed. As far as live goes, coming from rock bands we wanted to bring something different to the table. Since we started this project, I had this vision of really putting on a show; I wanted to put on something more than just spinning our tracks. I figured people could come to our shows and dance, or they could also watch us perform as well. So live, I play the drums, PJ is on guitar, Nick glitches, and Brent sings. You can actually check out a live video of us on our youtube page: www.youtube.com/loveautomaticrock

Broken Circle:
Because the band didn't like it and the label didn't like it. It was outdated and didn't represent the album at all. Fingernail polish and eyeliner aren't cool.
