Senses Fail - The Fire (ALBUM REVIEW)

Click READ MORE to check out my review of the new Senses Fail album.

Senses Fail’s new album The Fire is an interesting listen from a band who over the last seven or so years has went from one of the most trash talked bands to one of the more respected bands in the scene.

The Fire to me is a make or break Senses Fail album. Still Searching earned the band a lot of credibility and Life Is Not A Waiting Room, although not a terrible album by any means, really didn’t outshine Still Searching in my opinion. After Life Is Not… Heath Saraceno (of Midtown fame) parted ways with the band and had a lot of people wondering what their next album would be like or if some of the magic would be lost. Well I believe we can all rest assured because The Fire maybe be one of the best albums of Senses Fail’s career.

One thing that feels different about this album is the overall heaviness of the album. The group has always mixed heavy with melodic, but this release may be their most aggressive one yet. Buddy Nielsen’s vocals have continuously improved over the course of the band’s career and they show marked improvement on this release. The clean vocals show improvement but the screaming/hardcore vocals found on the album are his best performance of those type of vocals found on any album of the bands catalog. Anyone fearing the music might suffer from the loss of Saraceno will easily notice his loss had little impact on the overall ability of the band to craft successful songs.

I think this album finds Senses Fail continuing to make the right decisions in the music business and further securing a career for the band. I can’t say this album is better than Still Searching, which I think may be my favorite of theirs, but I will say it’s at least as good as Still Searching and probably ties them for their best album. From start to finish the band give it 100% like them or not they do give their best effort on this one.

Good Charlotte - Cardiology (ALBUM REVIEW)

Click READ MORE to check out my review of the new Good Charlotte album.

Good Charlotte is one of those bands that hear a lot about how their first album was okay but the ones that followed were meh. Then they stuck around long enough for some of the older fans to start reminiscing about those good old days and for new potential listeners not to be too familiar with the lyrics “Girls don’t like boys, girls like cars and money…” After a mixed reception for the band’s last album Good Mourning Rival, which found the band experimenting with dance sounds, they have returned with Cardiology. This is an album that Joel Madden stated would have nothing dance-y on it.

Cardiology basically offers fans a pop album that teeters somewhere between the want to be an alternative radio band like Third Eye Blind or Fountains Of Wayne to an alternative punkish band like Eve 6. The result is successful if you want that kind of album. In the end it just feels like the band are once again jumping sounds to a new genre and trying to see if that will gain them any headway.

Tracks like “Sex On The Radio” remind me a lot of “Stacy’s Mom” by Fountains Of Wayne with cheesy lyrics and overall marketability. It is probably the highlight of the record. “Standing Ovation” finds Madden’s vocals in a similar style to someone like Rob Thomas or Stephen Jenkins.

Overall, I would say if you are a Good Charlotte fan, you should be pleased with the album. If you did not like the dance vibe of Good Morning Revival, but enjoyed the other albums you might like this one. Good Charlotte have found a more mature sound on this one, maybe not lyrically but musically they are trying, but at the end of listening to this one it just feels like a taxing listen. Modern rock radio might have single potential with this album. Lyrically, it is a little too cheesy for me to enjoy really. It sounds like a band trying to find a sound that will work for them, as they grow older. It is a better album than their last album, it may be a better album than their last couple of albums, but I do not think it will sway the haters enough to jump on board anytime soon.

Rival Summers - Blankets & Sheets (EP REVIEW)

Click READ MORE to check out my review of Rival Summers new EP.

Rival Summers is the one-man acoustic project of singer/songwriter Leo Bautista and the act has began to build a nice buzz. He has performed with prominent musical acts. He is getting ready to head out on tour with Backseat Goodbye and Chase Coy.

Rival Summers’ new EP Blankets & Sheets was released on the year anniversary of his debut album Ready When You Are and the short two song EP almost serves as more of a digital single over an EP. The EP was produced & mixed by Chase Coy. Coy, who has a similar style of songwriting, does a good job at capturing the stripped-down acoustic/piano instrumentation. Production wise it is a nice step forward from the tracks I have heard from the previous album. The particular style on the EP is not groundbreaking and we have definitely heard it before. Luckily, for Bautista he does a good job at conquering the style and conveying his ideas well enough to set himself apart from the pack.

This short EP has a youthful vibe to it and is perfect for this time of year. It has a very laid-back sound. Lyrically it gets the job done and I think it gets the point of the music across and accomplishes what Bautista set out to accomplish. This EP is very much in the same vein of and for fans of artists like Dashboard Confessional, The Lyndsay Diaries, and Secondhand Serenade. I think the thing that piqued my interest about this release is the relatively young artist potential to continue on this particular songwriting path. I am interested in his ability to write a follow-up album to this EP that has some nice LP potential. I say check this one out if the above sounds interesting to you.
