The Pack - Wolfpack Party (ALBUM REVIEW)
1:06 AM
Sound In The Signals
Click READ MORE to check out my review of The Pack's new album Wolfpack Party.
It has been a while since The Pack’s debut album Based Boys. Three years to be exact. A lot has changed in that time. Jive Records is no longer the label of The Pack. The new album finds the group moved to SMC Recordings. Each member of the group has expanded into being a solo artist, some of other groups, and many of them are now clothing designers. Lil B has taken the Internet by storm.
The Pack was one of the first groups to score a mainstream single moving hip-hop in a new direction. They were gaining major attention before The Cool Kids had their huge buzz with their bike inspired first single “Black Mags.” The Pack’s single “Vans” definitely showed hip-hop progressing into a new playing field and the group enjoyed a fair amount of success with that particular track. Their debut EP Skateboards To Scrapers sold fairly well also. The debut album Based Boys was poised to take the group to a new level. Then something happened. It seemed that the label just had no idea what to do with the group, while countless other clone groups from the Bay Area emerged copying The Pack, then the whole scene was engulfed by the “skateboarding” rapper trend. Many artists emerged and they all claimed to be based which was an idea and style that The Pack had originated.
So after three years, some downtime, and various other projects the group return with their sophomore album Wolfpack Party. The big questions on everyone’s mind is how does it stack up to the debut and is it enough to stand out in the new hip-hop arena that has been built over the last few years?
As I listen to the album one thing is evident. The group put a lot of time into creating the best album they could. None of the members wants to be the star of the album. This is a group effort. The album lives up to its title. It definitely has a party vibe. The beats are some of the best I have heard from the group as they hold the signature style the group is known for having. Young L shows off his improved production on the album as well as The Cataracs. It would be tough not to enjoy the beats. If you are not a fan of the vulgar or raunchy lyrics you can find some solace in the top-notch production which I feel at times can drive the album over any lyric or hook. This is not to say that the rhyming is lacking because the album also shows off improved rapping from the group. Each member’s flow has improved and the lyrics are stronger than some of their previous efforts.
The album is like Based Boys on steroids. It is a bigger beast but it holds many of the same characteristics. The album has many tracks that are about similar things you heard on Based Boys, but it definitely has an amped up feeling.
My overall analysis is that this album could win some fans over. If you were a fan of The Pack and have waited out the years for the sophomore album you should be more than pleased. This is a much more complete album. The Pack sticks to what worked from previous releases but improved on those things. The beats show what two or three years in the studio can produce, which is a much improved, refined sound. Will everyone love this album? No, I don’t think so. I don’t think certain groups can win over certain audiences. The lyrics could be considered offensive, but The Pack as a group knows who they are and own their sound and ideas on the album. As a fan of the group’s debut album Based Boys this is the album I wanted to hear the group make. It is an album that starts and keeps up its pace for the entire 19 tracks, which is a tough task for any album. It lives up to its name and it is certainly a Wolfpack Party.

Hey Monday - Beneath It All (EP REVIEW)
2:37 PM
Sound In The Signals
Click READ MORE to check out my review of Hey Monday's new EP!
There are only a few things to be said about the new Hey Monday album EP. The album has been surrounded by controversy since the switch from album to EP. It had people questioning what was going on in the Hey Monday camp. The EP itself delivers about half of the track list of the original album announcement. After hearing it, I am kind of glad. The EP is a big step down from their previous effort, which I found somewhat enjoyable.
In a world where peers like Paramore and VersaEmerge have crafted strong albums (not saying they are my favorite bands…but I admit the performance is strong) Hey Monday return with a few hollow pop/rockish tracks that mostly showcase Cassadee Pope and her at times very bad lyrics. I can say vocally overall she sounds good on the EP, though at times her voice is cringe worthy, the music is just overall bland and watered down. It offers absolutely nothing you have not heard before or heard better somewhere else. I do not blame her for shinning through on the EP vocally because this is the most promising thing it has to offer. I mean it would not take much with the generic songwriting. The shiny spots on the EP are “Wish You Were Here” and “Hangover” which are decently written pop songs. Lyrically they are not too bad. They seem like the best example of what the band was trying to accomplish with the new EP. I wish the band could have delivered five or so more songs of this quality. It might have silenced a few of the haters. However, it might have even been a better idea to slim this down even farther to an iTunes single with a bonus track.
I am not in the business of slamming releases and I am in no way a hater of this band. As I said, the previous release was entertaining and although not original had some well-written songs. This release however was disappointing and lackluster. It is at best for teenage girls, which is a shame because Hey Monday’s peers have conquered some of the stereotypes that revolve around female fronted bands. I think this band could have a strong career ahead of them. They just have to search for something that makes them even a little unique and they need really to work on lyrics.
At this point, I can only ask what is next for Hey Monday? Is Dr. Pepper interested in having a band in the bubble again? The lovers of Hey Monday will call this another biased review from someone who would have reviewed the EP negatively regardless. To them I say not true. I actually thought the band would come out swinging on the EP and try to compete with some of the larger female fronted pop/rock acts. It just doesn’t and that is not my fault. To those people who will hate this review do not worry. One of these songs will probably catch on with listeners and the band will make some money and generate some good press.

The Secret Handshake - Night And Day (ALBUM REVIEW)
2:33 PM
Sound In The Signals
Click READ MORE to check out my review of The Secret Handshake's new album.
What do you do when your style has become so disliked and watered down? Well that is a good question. You can soldier on or hope people somehow lump you into the better than the rest category, or you can go the way The Secret Handshake’s Luis Dubac went on his new album Night And Day. The album is a complete style shift with a Motown feel, horns, instruments, and not much of the signature auto tune electronic vibe you have come to know from Dubac. So the big question is how good is it? Well it depends on your perception of The Secret Handshake and it depends on what you expect or want from Dubac. The album is different.
I was highly disappointed with My Name In Lights. I thought the album would have built on some of the better parts of The Secret Handshake. When Dubac’s biggest single “Summer Of 98” was released a few years ago, I enjoyed the track and it showed some nice progress and good use of the media he was working with. My Name In Lights did not do much to improve Dubac’s reputation and I definitely did not see it on very many end-of-the-year lists. I think the main downfall of Dubac is his vocal ability. While masked a little on One Full Year it came off as okay, when it showed up without many effects on My Name In Lights I was less than impressed. It is definitely better on this album than on My Name In Lights but it is still fairly weak. Often times the songs sound too powerful for his voice. Tracks like “Domino” where the music overpowers his vocals make it a hard listen, which unfortunately is a similar case with most of the album.
It was hard to make it through this one. It was not very interesting despite the style switch. It felt forced. It sounds like this album was an attempt to move away from a stagnate style in hopes of generating some buzz. The experimentation was welcomed in some ways. I will not deny I am more than tired of the millions of electronic laptop artists that have emerged over the last few years, but style change or not it just does not impress me. Musically if you like the style, it does what it needs to do. Ultimately, the vocals just are not that impressive. Like with My Name In Lights the vocals are one of the things that destroy the flow and enjoyment of the album, for me at least.
A shiny spot on the album is that “Used To Be Sweet” is a good track. I like the flow and Lights is a good guest for the track. It would be a good choice for a single. I like the balance of this song between Dubac’s vocal abilities and the music itself.
Overall, I would say this album could have been a cool experiment and I applaud Dubac for taking a chance and he does a decent job at pulling off a new genre. Still the weak areas have not been improved upon on this album and overall it just feels boring. If you were a fan of the electronic vibe, this album may alienate you. If you did not like Dubac’s vocals before, the same problems are evident on this release. If you do not mind a style switch and enjoyed the vocals, check it out because it might be for you.

Alexander Spit - Until Next Summer (ALBUM REVIEW)
2:56 PM
Sound In The Signals
Click READ MORE to check out my review of the new Alexander Spit album!
Alexander Spit’s new album is just about the best way to end the summer that I can think of. The beat choices on the album and the rhyming are about as good as it gets.
I’ve heard releases where the beat choices are weak and the lyrics and rhyming are strong and I’ve heard vice versa. It’s nice when an artist can find both. The album has that new California feel and in some ways reminds me of the feel of U-N-I’s A Love Supreme. Spit is his own artist but it definitely has the California vibe and feel. You can hear the sunshine and the grit.
The standout track in my opinion is “Our Time” which has an anthem feel to it. The hook is nice and I wouldn’t be surprised to see a video for this track in the near future. The guests on the album are nice additions. Casey Veggies shows up on “Shades On” and once again proves why his buzz has been growing. The guests do not own the album which is true on some hip hop releases. This is Alexander Spit’s album and his flow and lyricism are the backbone of the tracks found on the new album.
The album doesn’t have too many flaws either. There are different vibes on the album and I think there is something for most hip hop fans on there. It’s always good when an artist can progress and make every album better. I think this album is better than the last, which speaks highly of the material because Spit’s last album was a really good album.

Mike Posner - 31 Minutes To Takeoff (Album Review)
2:54 PM
Sound In The Signals
Click READ MORE to check out my review of the new Mike Posner album!
I’ve listened to Mike Posner’s mix tapes and I found his music to be descent enough. It never gained heavy rotation on my iPOD, but I acknowledged it wasn’t half bad pop music. It wasn’t until I heard the track “Bow Chicka Wow Wow” (I know the title is cheesy but the song is actually a cool listen) that I thought this album might have potential to be a cool end of summer album.
Posner vocally delivers on the album. Although it may not be as diverse as an album you might here from Justin Timberlake, who Posner often gets compared to, it shows Posner has the ability to compete against some of the bigger pop vocalists out today. I saw an interview where Posner guaranteed his album would be better than his mix tapes. I agree for the most part that the album delivers exactly what I thought it would. It is pop music with some electro mixed in here and there. Overall, I would say Posner, who produces himself, did a good job with making and picking the beats and music. Most of the lyrics aren’t deep, but I don’t think they are supposed to be very deep. I think the lyrics get the job done on the album for what Posner wants to convey with the album. I’m not knocking all the lyrics though Posner does dabble in some deep lyrics here and there.
The new album by Mike Posner is an interesting listen. It is pop music done the right way in my opinion. There are a few misses, but overall I like the album. I wonder about the longevity of the album though. The album has a lot of single potential, but it’s the type of album that heavy rotation of singles could easily make it wear thin for repeated listens. Posner seems to find an in with a more hip hop based audience, but he’s had trouble winning over fans at Warped Tour (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ltd1NSpgaTI&feature=player_embedded). I’ll be interested to see how well this album is received by the masses. I will say I like it and I’d recommend it.

Black Label Society - Order Of The Black (Album Review)
2:50 PM
Sound In The Signals
Click Read More to check out my review of the new Black Label Society album!
Black Label Society’s new album Order Of The Black is about everything you could want from a Black Label Society album. Zakk Wylde has spent years solidifying himself as one of the biggest presences in metal and has done it all while maintaining an underground appeal.
Some people were worried when Zakk didn’t show up to the Ozzy party on Ozzy’s new album Scream and was replaced by Firewind guitarist Gus G. This absence, the rumors Wylde’s drinking problem was out of control, and the pictures that surfaced of Wylde in the hospital with blood clots had everyone wondering if Wylde was in trouble. I think it’s safe to say with this album he is doing fine and he is perfecting the elements that have made all the Black Label albums so prominent in the metal community.
There are quite a few rockers, some good riffing, and a few ballads on this album. For anyone familiar with Wylde’s work throughout Black Label’s career this is pretty familiar territory for him. I will say it never gets old and Wylde keeps the sound fresh and his grand guitar abilities are showcased in true form on this album. His voice is in excellent condition for this release. He belts it out in a way that would make Ozzy proud.
I don’t mind the ballads on the album either. I know a lot of metal heads just can’t take the ballad stuff and don’t worry there is plenty of heavy stuff on here to satisfy your ears, but I don’t mind a ballad or two. Wylde proves he can throw a few ballads into the mix and keep the flow of the album strong. I think the ballads actually add a good element to the music and some depth. The ballads are really the moments when Wylde can showcase his vocal ability. The listener is not only waiting to hear the almighty guitar solos he has the ability to shred, although it doesn’t bother me when they show up in the slower tracks.
After a couple listens I think it’s safe to say that this album feels stronger than the previous album Shot To Hell. I don’t think it is the best Black Label Society album, but I think it’s a strong album and a good listen. Sorry Ozzy but this album is just better than your new one.

August 8, 2010
Albert Haynesworth finally passed Mike Shanahan's conditioning test. He arrived at the field early Saturday morning and completed run one in 66 seconds and run two in 70 seconds. This story rather irks me. He should run the scheme the team wants him to run and he should be there during off-season. Sometimes coaches have to push players to get the best results. However, I look forward to hearing more about Donovan McNabb now that Haynesworth is not the main focus. I hope that talk will not turn to McNabb being too old, not having enough left in the tank, or any more dramatics.
In other news, Jockey might want to check in with Tim Tebow. His Broncos teammates cut his hair, well rather buzzed it at training camp. Not all of it, just the center. Imagine a pointy brown wreath of hair around his surprisingly round head or check the picture out at http://twitpic.com/2ckyyv
Side note- news from the St. Louis Rams is that Sam Bradford made a great first impression in a scrimmage. While Tebow was being sheared and continuing crazed media-attention actions, Bradford went 7-for-9 for 94 yards with a touchdown. Yeah, sometimes players get attention for playing and sometimes it is for crazy haircuts or wearing wedding dresses in public.
The other big news for football over the weekend was the induction of players into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. New members include Jerry Rice, Emmitt Smith, Dick LeBeau, Russ Grimm, John Randle, Rickey Jackson, and Floyd Little. Rice said that at 47 he still feels like he could play, perhaps Brett Favre could think about this. Rice said this is the greatest team he ever joined.
Speaking of inductions, the only thing sports analysts have been talking about since Alex Rodriguez finally hit #600 is whether he deserves to be recognized. Woody Paige provided many comical comments on the issue on Around the Horn last week. I agree this must be a great time for Rodriguez, but it is a little salty. Look at the records of the illustrious (well somewhat illustrious) 600 club. There were 30-year expanses between some of the members joining, but more recently, those who have used enhancements have joined the club in record time. Some will never recognize him or Barry Bonds for that matter, but maybe if Rodriguez plays clean from now on people could start counting again.
Let me know what you think. Should coaches push their players, who will get more playing time this season-Tebow or Bradford, and do you recognize Rodriguez's hits? Also, what is your interpretation of Inception? Although not sports related, Leo is always courtside at the basketball games with his newest model girlfriend and I just genuinely cannot stop analyzing this movie. Comment below!

Charles Hamilton - Segahamilton.blogspot.com (MIXTAPE REVIEW)

Sound In The Signals
Here is my review of the new Charles Hamilton mixtape. I discuss not only the mixtape, but also some of my views on Charles Hamilton as an artist and the state of his career. Click READ MORE to check it out!
I always debate what to say about Charles Hamilton. He has made huge mistakes with his career. The J. Dilla incident will never ever go away. The punch he received from an angry girlfriend, which was broadcasted across youtube, will never go away. Some will say he lost his big opportunity. They might be right. I think his work ethic and the amount and quality of the material he is always releasing shows he is a decent artist with big ideas.
I think this mixtape once again displays his flow and lyrical ability. He is a unique artist. I think when he finally releases an album that could have some major push we may see Hamilton make his way back from what has been a tough last couple of years for a man who has deemed himself Sonic the Hamilton. I do not think he will ever have the hype he once had, but he may prove himself as a viable artist.
This new mixtape dropped while Charles is supposedly recovering from some type of mental breakdown. It is another in a slew of at least decent quality mixtapes that Hamilton has released over the last two or three years. It seems like every month or two Hamilton floods the market with anywhere from 1-5 mixtapes at a time and is constantly churning out something new. He has almost become the king of mixtape rappers at this point. I am not sure who at this point is pulling for him. He has amassed a ton of haters and a ton of supporters.
Overall, I think this mixtape is one of the better ones Hamilton has released in a while. I do not expect that he will slow down the flow of the mixtapes or the amount of material he releases. I would like to see an official album out this year, one that he can fully support and promote, and one that is called an “album” with no mixtape at the end of it. At this point, it feels like Charles Hamilton has repeated his freshman year for the last couple of years. He has perfected the ability to be that type of rapper, and in no way do I criticize his work ethic, but I would like to see the freshman finally become the sophomore. Until then I will set back and continue to be somewhat interested in the Charles Hamilton show: an artist who is providing the listener with a massive amount of music and is always under scrutiny for some reason or another. My one request is can someone hook up Charles Hamilton with better mixtape cover art?
