I run (and write) most of the stuff on Sound In The Signals as a one man operation, but we do a have a few people that contribute. We are going to try and have one of our resident sports nuts type up some weekly highlights for our sports section. Click READ MORE to check out the first installment!

First off, let's discuss the recent NFL contract signings. Dez Bryant, the 24th pick of the draft who will make his home with the Cowboys, signed for five years with a guaranteed $8.3 million up to $11.8 million. Toughen up buddy, getting paid $8.3 million to carry someone’s shoulder pads for a year isn’t so bad. It is ridiculous but so it a lot about hazing.

I knew Bryant would get a good deal. What surprises me somewhat is that Colt McCoy, who just got married and can now quit pretending he and his wife is celibate, signed for four years and a guaranteed $1.07 million up to $5 million. I get it. He was a third-round pick, but more people know his name than Bryant's name. Colt is a QB. He is the most winning QB in college history.

What everyone is wondering though is what unprecedented deal Sam Bradford is going to sign with the Rams. Going number 1 will guarantee him multi-millions, but just how high will they go. All this has to be decided soon because he is supposed to report to training camp Thursday. It’s now rumored to be between $45 million to $50 million.

Other questions on my mind are whether or not the rumors of Tom Brady thinking about holding out for more money is true, how many times he will motion to his knee next season when players come near him, and what contract will Tim Tebow sign?

BUT - the biggest question is when will the Jets finally pay Darrelle Revis?!?! Come on guys. Despite his overall agility and his number of blocks, do you really want to lose Revis Island? Sign a new deal!


Other sports highlights:
Viking's coach Brad Childress still does not know if Brett Favre is coming back next season. You know, the season that starts in a couple of months. I know we're not all on pins and needles. Nevertheless, I think Favre needs to talk ESPN into an hour show where he can announce his decision. We need to know what he is doing with his talents!

Major League Baseball is implementing random testing for human growth hormones in the minor leagues. (Those things that make it possible for the guys to hit the balls far). Not much to say here. However, this might hurt the future of players who write tattle-tell books on who is using and who is injecting each other in the ass.

Alex Rodriguez is about to hit it lucky not just with another random aging blonde celebrity. He hit #559 and he is about to join the illustrious 600 club which belongs to only six other players. Well we knew he was good at hitting unattainable things before, now he is just using a baseball bat. Batting on his birthday did not prove to help him. The 600 club waits. Hey Cleveland, at least you did not let him get 600 on your home field.

Ladies and gentlemen, they just don’t make them like this anymore, or at least you will not find many making them like this. After a long break Rufio return to claim their punk/pop throne as one of the best of a genre that has become a slightly different version of what it was four to seven years ago.

As a fan of punk/pop during the Blink 182 explosion, I watched bands like New Found Glory, Slick Shoes, The Ataris, Yellowcard, etc… become huge underground and then mainstream hits. Many of those bands have hung up their guitars for now (except New Found Glory who have continuously churned out quality material). When Rufio hung up their guitars and announced they were calling it a day many fans of the pop/punk genre, including myself, saw a little piece of what was so enjoyable about that particular time in pop/punk fade away. As the years progressed new bands emerged some good, some awful, as always, some incorporated new elements. In the end most people tend to say pop/punk became a lot more pop than punk.

When I heard Rufio was going to give it another shot I wondered if the band would go on the Perhaps, I Suppose tour and announce they had hit writers block and just couldn’t finish the album. I was pleasantly surprised to hear the four-song EP the band released earlier in the year and found it a mainstay on my iPOD. With the album now finally out, it is safe to say this statement: I dare you to find another band that has made a better true to form pop/punk album this year. Original members Scott Sellers and Clarke Domae team up with the new rhythm section consisting of Taylor Albaugh and Terry Stirling Jr. and with the new line-up the band have added another fantastic album to their catalog. I honestly cannot think of the last time I heard a pop/punk album and felt this way about it. It’s that good.

Sellers vocals have been both criticized and complimented on the new album. I think he has become a better vocalist and vocally this might be my favorite Rufio album. Domae and Sellers guitar work is phenomenal on the album. It is everything you’d want and more. The guitars ring out in all the right places and the leads would make any pop/punk fan appreciative. The new rhythm section holds down their part and adds a lot to the band. The drums sound great.

Now if we can just convince Yellowcard to make another record. Tell Blink 182 actually to record their new album. Tell Kris Roe to get that Ataris album out finally. Find Ryan Kepke and convince him the Slick Shoes were terribly underrated. We can have a full-fledged comeback of the pop/punk I grew up on, which would put a smile on my face. I’m not bitter though I’m just glad I have this album. I urge Anybody Out There to buy this!

Bradley Hathaway’s new four-song EP A Thousand Angry Panthers is an interesting listen. I wasn’t sure what to expect going into the EP. I have seen Hathaway open for The Chariot some years ago while performing spoken word poetry. However, I had never listened to Hathaway’s music. I must say I found myself impressed on first listen.

The four song EP doesn’t reinvent the wheel and in many ways it is a standard issue folk album as far as the instruments are concerned. What shines through on the EP are the vocals and lyrics. This shouldn’t surprise many considering Hathaway is a well-established author and poet. Words are his bread and butter and on this release, it shows. The vocals remind me of a mix of Conor Oberst, Sufjan Stevens, with a hint of Ben Gibbard, which is not a bad combo. The comparisons may be drawn to the fact that the vocals although similar, they are strong and the lyrics are well developed (something the three mentioned artists have in common with Hathaway). I read one review that seemed to have a negative view on Hathaway’s singing and his musical ability. I’m not sure what that reviewer heard but I enjoyed the vocal performance. It has a raw energy to it that I really enjoy.

Now when I say the music hasn’t reinvented the wheel I don’t mean it is bad. It actually adds a lot to the mood of the album. The entire EP, to me, gives off a haunting but upbeat feel. It is an EP that can be listened to more than casually.

Overall, I’d say I’m impressed by the EP and not knowing what to expect I was pleasantly surprised. I’d recommend this to fans of Bright Eyes, Death Cab For Cutie, Sufjan Stevens, Kevin Devine, etc… it would sit well on a shelf with those albums.

I wish we had known that the full length would be coming a little later before telling everyone about it, but there's nothing we can do about it now. Asher Roth has decided to release his most current mixtape ,Seared Foie Gras, without the DJ blends in a version he is calling the "Fat Free" version. I like this mixtape. It's better without the DJ Blends. I think in 2010 I can safely say I'm not a huge fan of the DJ drop or blend and think they are kind of unessecary. Read More!
